Our verdict

Updated August 7, 2026

Employers like Checkr and candidates often don't, and both are reacting to the same design. HR teams on G2, Capterra, and TrustRadius praise the integrations, the self-serve pricing, and checks that clear in minutes or days. Candidates on Trustpilot and BBB describe the other tail: county checks that stall for weeks, records that surface without context, and support that routes everyone through a chatbot. Budget for pass-through fees on top of the package price, because that gap is the single most common billing complaint.

Best for

Teams that hire steadily and want per-report pricing inside the ATS they already use

Praised for
Fast turnaround when checks run clean; reviewers report results in minutes to a couple of days
Easy for both sides: employers order in a few clicks, candidates finish on their phones
Deep integration catalog; G2 and Capterra reviewers repeatedly praise the ATS and payroll hookups
Published pay-as-you-go pricing with no contracts, rare in this industry
Candidates can dispute records and add context, and several reviewers credit fair-chance features
Criticisms
Support is chat-first with no phone line; the most common complaint across every platform
Court and DMV pass-through fees can push a bill well past the sticker price
County-court searches can stretch a check from days to weeks with little status detail
Some candidates report records shown without dispositions or context, forcing disputes
Candidates rate Checkr much lower than employers do (2.76 on BBB vs 4.5 on G2)

What Checkr actually does differently

Pay-as-you-go pricing with published rates

Per-report pricing ($29.99 to $94.99) is on the public pricing page with no contracts or minimums. Legacy competitors like Sterling and HireRight mostly quote through sales.

Automated adjudication (Checkr Assess)

Programmatic record filtering that Checkr says cuts manual review of results by up to 85%, across 235 criminal record categories on the Premium tier.

Continuous criminal monitoring

Ongoing alerts when an employee's criminal record changes, at $1.70 per person per month, instead of re-running point-in-time checks.

200+ ATS, HRIS, and payroll integrations

Checks start and complete inside tools teams already use: Greenhouse, Gusto, Rippling, BambooHR, QuickBooks, and an API for custom flows.

One platform beyond employment screening

Tenant screening, mortgage verification, a real-time risk API (Trust), and free personal verified profiles run on the same infrastructure.

Who Checkr is for

Small businesses and one-person HR teams hiring a few people a month

They need compliant background checks without signing an annual contract or learning screening law, and delays lose them candidates.

Self-serve signup with pay-as-you-go reports: Basic at $29.99 or Essential at $59.99 per report, no contracts or minimums, with recommended screenings per role built in.

Gig marketplaces, staffing agencies, and high-volume hourly employers

Thousands of checks a year through an ATS, where a day of screening delay means losing workers to the next offer.

The Enterprise tier adds API access, 200+ ATS and HRIS integrations, automated adjudication, and continuous monitoring. Lyft is a named long-term customer.

Trucking, delivery, and other driver-heavy operations

Driver hires need MVR pulls, CDL verification, and DOT-compliant drug testing on top of criminal checks.

MVR reports at $9.50, commercial MVR with CDLIS search at $14.50, and a full DOT add-on menu (employment verification, drug and alcohol testing, physicals) on any Workforce package.

Healthcare and other regulated employers

Sanction lists, license checks, and thorough court coverage are mandatory, and a miss is a compliance incident.

The Complete package ($94.99) covers county, state, and federal courts, with FACIS healthcare sanction searches from $6 and professional license verification at $12 as add-ons.

Churches, nonprofits, and volunteer programs

Boards, admins, and children's programs need everyone screened, on a budget, without an HR department.

Reviewers describe running volunteer checks through integrations like Planning Center on pay-as-you-go Basic or Essential reports, with no minimums. One minister reports faster and cheaper checks than his previous provider.

Independent landlords and property managers

Screening a tenant usually means juggling separate criminal, credit, and eviction services, then waiting days.

Checkr Tenant bundles criminal, eviction, credit, and income in one report ($24.99 to $44.99), with no business registration required to start.

Job seekers and independent contractors

They want to see their own record before an employer does, or prove they're already vetted.

Checkr Personal offers a free verified profile, and self background checks starting at $49.99.

Overall the reports are neatly laid out

Overall the reports are neatly organized and easy to read. They have nice help files if needed and overall the site is tidy looking and easy to locate stuff. The area where people log in to see reports seems to keep the reports area separate from logging into the set up a background check area. Very nice clean simple.

very good company

very good company 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟its no secret trustpilot has been doing shady stuff for years.. every business owner and reviewer knows it.. almost nobody actually trusts them or depends on them at this point. the only reason they are still in business is because google keeps ranking them stupidly high. if google wasnt propping them up, i genuinely dont think anyone would still use them.. Heres the thing, when someone googles your brand, trustpilot has a very real chance of showing up naturally. so as a business owner it makes total sense to want a good presence there. and that's exactly how they keep getting people onto their platform despite everything.

Worst customer service experience

Worst customer service experience. I wanted to do a background check on a new hire.It let's you build a package or what you want done. So, I built one for $160. Then I get a bill for $414 because there is a "passthough fee" or more than the entire package I thought I was buying- so this is costing more than double what I agreed to. Be warned!!!!!!!

Checkr is fast but NOT accurate

Checkr is fast but NOT accurate. They show ALL charges regardless of guilty or not guilty verdicts going back to your birthdate. It is completely AI and has no reasoning ability to depict verdicts, only initial charges. Totally unreliable, for the companies doing the background check AND for the person getting checked.

Non-existent customer service

What a horrible customer service experience. You can't speak to a real person via their chat or on the phone. I was on the phone with their AI for 30 minutes and it kept saying that it was transferring me to a real person then it would say it hadn't heard from me in a while and would end the call after 5 seconds. What type of company refuses to help you? Horrible. I also requested a copy of my background check over a month ago and I still don't have it.

Frequently asked questions

Is Checkr worth it?+

For most employers, yes. Business reviewers rate it 4.5 on both G2 (457 reviews) and Capterra (303 reviews), citing fast results, easy ordering, and 200+ ATS integrations. The value drops if you hire in counties with slow courts or need hands-on support, since those are the two recurring complaints.

Is Checkr free?+

No. Business background checks are pay per report: Basic $29.99, Essential $59.99, Complete $94.99, plus court and DMV pass-through fees at cost. There are no contracts or minimums. The one free product is Checkr Personal's verified profile; a self background check starts at $49.99.

Is Checkr safe and legit?+

Yes. Checkr is an FCRA-regulated consumer reporting agency, BBB-accredited with an A+ business rating, and says over 140,000 businesses use it, including Lyft. Legitimacy is not the issue reviewers raise; delays and disputed records are. Candidates can dispute inaccurate results, and several reviewers describe doing so successfully.

What are the biggest complaints about Checkr?+

Three come up on every platform: support that funnels through chatbots with no phone line, checks that stall for weeks in county courts, and pass-through fees that inflate the final bill past the advertised package price. Candidates also report records appearing without dispositions, which forces a dispute to fix.

How long does a Checkr background check take?+

Reviewers report anywhere from 30 minutes to a few days when records are clean and digital. Checks needing county courthouse lookups or manual verification take longer, and the loudest critical reviews describe waits of several weeks. Checkr's own guidance says most checks finish in minutes to five business days.
